Cinnamon is one of the most commonly used spices in the world of witchcraft. Its versatility leaves it to appear in many rituals and on many altars. The purpose of cinnamon is vast, hence why its use is so widespread. Its history is as rich and deep as its flavor.
Native to India, it was widely exported. One of the biggest imports was Ancient Egypt. The Egyptians used cinnamon in embalming. This led to the spice being burned as incense in the burial and funeral process. It symbolized luck on their journey to the afterlife. Cassia, native to China, was also popular with this purpose, and were often gifted in times of bereavement. Because it was used as well wishes in death, it started to be associated the same way in life.

In a similar sense, cinnamon is considered a holy spice in Hinduism. It is used in rituals for purification, physically and spiritually. It is also used as an offering, especially to Ganesha. As he is known for removing obstacles, cinnamon is made to clear the way. Chinese Traditional Medicine also uses cinnamon to help with cardiovascular health. In a sense, this also promotes the same purification that we see in Hinduism.
In Greek Mythology, Dionysus also likes cinnamon as an offering. He is less about clearing the path, and more about bringing things in. Therefore, the mythos of cinnamon used as abundance. While Dionysus appreciates cinnamon, he is known even more for his love of wine. A total leisure seeker. This is why spiced wines have a special place at his altar, and are revered by witches or referred to as “Witches Brews”.

It is easy to see how cinnamon worked its way into witchcraft and has so much meaning behind it. Often used in potions or candlemaking, it is widely regarded for its properties in abundance and attraction. Some will even add cinnamon to a spell to speed up its process. One easy way to incorporate cinnamon into your practice is with a very easy, monthly abundance ritual.
You can do this on the first of the month or even on a New Moon. Each of these times represent a new beginning. Take some ground cinnamon outside with you. When you exit your home, stand right outside your doorway with the cinnamon in the palm of your hand. You can speak words into it, like, “May abundance find me. May I attract good luck and good fortune. I allow money to come to me easily. I will be booked and busy all month long.” Whatever feels right to your situation. Blow the cinnamon right off your hand and through the doorway into your home! I recommend leaving it sit until your next clean. If you have pets or children, you may want to look further into their safety before doing this.

This should be repeated the first of each month, doubling up the intention or setting a new one each time. It is a very simple way of bringing in wealth and prosperity to you and those who enter your home! Now you are prepared for the first, which will be next Monday. Good luck, everyone!
